Challenging on?

Postby sharon on Fri May 22, 2009 6:59 pm

What exactly is the protocol for breaking into games? I was treated rudely by 4 older women at the Yacht Harbor a few weeks ago. I'm a fairly skilled beach player but don't have a regular partner. Do I need to have a partner to challenge on? I have seen other posts about women players looking for partners and will try to meet up with them. For now, how does it all work in terms of challenging on? Thanks for your help. ~Sharon

Hi Sharon,

As a whole, most people are open to challenges from players with similar playing ability. This is probably more true at Main Beach than the Yacht Harbor where the number of courts is very limited. Established 4-somes may not accept challenges from players outside of their group but I would hope they would at least be pleasant about it. Do not let a few bad attitudes influence your perception of local volleyball.

See Rowland's post with more detail about the process of challenging on at:

Hang in there,

Phil

Lots of woman go to the harbor to play and set up doubles games during the week, They have been doing it for years. They have limited time to play and only have time to play for a hour or so.
If it was during a week day and they were other courts available for you to play on, i would ask politely and I wouldn't push the issue. If all the courts were filled and it was a week end then It is a different story.
If you asked politely they should have responded the same even if it was a no.
The same goes for main beach
