There are a lot of great women players in the area, but I don't know of any "club volleyball" teams. The NCVA (Northern California Volleyball Association 415 550 7582) runs a league format for adult women, with tournaments in the Bay Area from the late fall to early spring. Some of us participated in years past. Lately, however, it seems that the tournaments are too infrequent and too far away and the format is a little awkward. They run AA gold, AA Silver, A gold, A silver.....unless you bring the exact same team every time, you can be bounced between divisions depending on your W/L record. Bring a strong team, move up, then someone critical can't come, so you play with a weaker team in a stronger division and get hammered, then she comes back and finds the team mired in a lower division. Kind of frustrating after you have gotten up at 5 am to drive two hours to the venue. But if you do put together a team, it is a lot of fun.
Many of our great women play on the beach. It's close, it's cheap, the competition is great, the cameraderie is good. You only need four women for a game! There are a few local tournaments; you have to travel if you want more.
The BIG news is that we have run a 6-woman indoor league with a new format this past fall. Super players, great games. We obtained New Brighton Middle School gym under the umbrella of Capitola Recreation. They signed up 30 individual women for a 15-week Tuesday-evening league. We did a rated draw of five teams, and played a double round-robin over 6 weeks, then re-drew teams and played a second double round-robin. The last couple of weeks we drew teams on the spot and just played with whomever showed up. Everyone played two full matches each evening. The exact format is open to discussion.
We are hoping this league will happen again soon. Please contact Capitola Recreation 831 475 5935 and urge them to schedule another round. If I get any further information, I will post it here and also send it to my e-mail list of interested women.
And there is GRASS. Almost every weekend, "over the hill." Doubles. Contact NCVA for info on this too.
Sometimes local folks sponsor grass doubles tourneys at Anna Jean Cummings Park in Soquel. I don't know who runs them. Good Luck finding something that works for you!
