Lack of power when spiking

Postby sharon on Wed Jan 28, 2009 3:50 pm

Hi Guys, I just don't have much power when spiking the ball. I've played for years, mostly open gyms and have taken classes but the power thing doesn't seem to click with me. Do any coach-types out there have suggestions for developing more power? Thanks, Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Although there are many factors involved in developing more power, try approaching the set a little later (meaning split-second later) and hitting the ball more in front of your body. It is common for spikers to run under the set and swing at it over their shoulder rather than in front of the body. This results in a loss of power (and less control).

Sharon-
Phil's idea is a good one. Keeping the ball in front of your shoulder allows you to generate more power.

Try really focusing on your contact point when you warm up. Be sure you are contacting the back of the ball with your open hand One drill to try would be to hit the ball over the net to a partner without jumping. Stand about 10-15' away from the net and working on reaching high and hitting hard, with top spin. Attacking over the net will force you to reach high and hit deep with power.

Another suggestion is to swing away. Gold Medal coach Marv Dunphy, suggests that hitters should never sacrifice accuracy for power. Try playing a few games where hitting hard, not accurate, is your focus. You might make a few errors and you'll learn how hard you really can hit.
