Float serve

Postby sage on Tue Apr 28, 2009 7:45 pm

Hello Fellow Volleyball Players!

What do people mean exactly by a "Float" serve. How is it executed?

Thank you for your insight.

Hi Sage,

A float or floater is a serve that does not spin. It is called a floater because it moves in erratic ways. Since the serve does not spin, air develops in front of the ball as it travels over the net causing the ball to move unpredictably. Floaters can be very difficult to pass. To execute, hit the ball dead center with the heel of the hand with a firm wrist (no wrist snap like the spike). There is little follow through and it is similar to a punching motion with a slight pull back at contact. With practice, floater serves can be a very effective way to score quick points.

Good luck,

Phil
