Traditional versus Rally Scoring

Postby Estevan on Tue Apr 28, 2009 9:22 am

Does anyone long for the good ole days when you actually had to be serving to win a point? When a game didn't end on a serve into the net? When amazing come-backs were actually possible? Why would anyone like Rally Scoring? Am I just a purist or have I missed the boat on this one?

Estevan,

I totally agree. I would add that rally scoring more often than traditional scoring allows less skilled/steaky teams that temporarily get hot to beat more skilled teams. In my opinion, consistency is rewarded less with rally scoring.

Yes that is a great drawback of rally scoring if you only play one game in a match as it can reward the streaky team. If you play a match 2/3 then the outcome is more honest as to which team is playing better ball that day.. You get a chance to "right the ship" if you lose the first "set". If the ship still sinks in the second set, I don't think the scoring system will matter. mhullo The big problem is keeping track of the score... mhullo :ugeek:

Keeping the correct score is another problem with Rally Scoring. Why do so many people use it since it seems to be a "lesser" way to play the game?

It was changed to make the length of matches more predictable for the purpose of showing it on TV.

I started doubles right about when rally scoring started. Think about it: Why would you not penalize someone for a serve in the net like sideout scoring does? Do you know of many sports that don't penalize faults liike volleyball used to?

Hey Jim,

I see your argument but, on the other side of the coin, you can't score unless you get your serve in. Does volleyball have to be like other sports? Or is it the unique characteristics of volleyball that make it so special as a sport?

Thanks,

Steve
