Rule 12.4 re: Setting over the net

Postby Jim on Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:43 pm

There seems to be some question about the legality of an overset.
Obviously, it's illegal to intentionally use the set as an attack unless it's REALLY clean and perfectly square to the shoulders. But what happens when the setter is trying to set their partner and accidentally puts it over the net?

In 2006, rule 12.4 included the following paragraph:
"A legal set directed towards a teammate that unintentionally crosses the net is not a fault."
The "towards a teammate" part of that text implies to me that it was allowed if (and only if) the hitter is right there at the net where the ball drifted over.

In 2008, that paragraph was removed.
Does that mean we are no longer allowed this "wiggle room"?

Great question again, Jim.

For the No Attitudes Allowed tournaments, the intention of the setter must be judged. If the setter is trying to set his teammate then it is a legal set if it drifts over. As you alluded to, the standards for setting your partner are much more liberal than when the set is used as an intentional attack over the net. This includes side setting to a teammate; the hitter does not necessarily have to be at the net.

I want players to learn how to hand set in a competitive situation so I make the standards for setting a teammate "looser" for my tournaments than those enforced in the CBVA.

In a CBVA Attitudes ONLY Allowed tourney, If you choose to put the ball over using your hands in a setting motion then your hands, your shoulders, and the ball ALL need to be in the same straight line when you contact and release the ball over the net. If you are attempting to set your partner and the ball goes over the net , the same standards apply in determining if the ball has been handled correctly. In a tourney, there is a ref that is there to make those calls, in a pick-up game it is a matter of honor...... mhullo
